Description

*British, WW2, Royal Air Force Pathfinder Force Eagle Breast Badge, Gilded Brass, Two Lug Fittings*

Original Second World War Royal Air Force Pathfinder Force eagle breast badge, constructed in gilded brass and fitted with two rear fixing lugs. The badge depicts a stylised eagle with outstretched wings in flight, finely die-struck with detailed feathering across the wings and body.

This type of metal eagle badge was worn by members of RAF Pathfinder Force (No. 8 Group) on the left breast pocket of the service tunic, positioned slightly below the pocket flap. The Pathfinder Force was formed in November 1942 to lead RAF Bomber Command raids by marking targets with flares and markers for the following bomber streams — one of the most demanding and dangerous specialist roles in Bomber Command.

Unlike the cloth brevet-style flying badges worn above the left breast pocket, the Pathfinder eagle was a separate metal insignia identifying crews belonging to the elite target-marking units. Period photographs show these badges being worn on service dress uniforms, although many crews reportedly removed them during operational flying to avoid identifying themselves as specialist target markers if captured.

The reverse retains the two original brass lugs, designed to secure the badge to the uniform using split pins. The gilded brass construction and lug fittings are consistent with wartime RAF insignia manufacture.

Approx. Measurements – Width: 5 cm. Height: 0.75 cm.

History Note:
RAF Pathfinder Force (No. 8 Group) was created under the command of Air Vice-Marshal Don Bennett in 1942. Its crews flew ahead of the main bomber formations to locate and accurately mark targets using coloured flares and incendiary markers. These units significantly improved the effectiveness of Bomber Command's night bombing operations.

Pathfinder crews were highly experienced and carefully selected from across Bomber Command squadrons, making Pathfinder insignia a recognised symbol of specialist skill within the RAF during the later years of the war.

*Condition*
Good original condition overall with honest service wear. The brass shows age-related patina and minor surface wear consistent with period use. Both original lugs remain intact and secure on the reverse. No major damage noted. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
