*British, WWI-Interwar Royal Air Force (RAF) Sweetheart Brooch, Enamel & Brass*
A lovely early RAF sweetheart brooch in brass and enamel — a touching keepsake from the formative years of the Royal Air Force.
A charming Royal Air Force (RAF) sweetheart brooch, measuring 5.4cm wide by 1.9cm tall. The design features a gilt brass winged emblem, the central roundel decorated in dark blue enamel with “RAF” monogram, surmounted by a red enamel King’s Crown. The wings are inlaid with mother-of-pearl style white enamel, giving a bright and eye-catching finish.
Sweetheart brooches such as this were privately purchased items, gifted to wives, fiancées and family members by RAF airmen as symbols of service and affection.
Historical Note:
The Royal Air Force was formed on 1 April 1918, becoming the world’s first independent air arm. Sweetheart brooches gained popularity during both the late WWI and interwar years, continuing into WWII. This style, with brass and enamel construction, is typical of pieces made between the late WWI period and the 1930s. They remain treasured mementoes of Britain’s fledgling air force.
*Condition*
Good overall condition with intact enamel to crown, centre, and wings. Brass retains original finish with some age-related toning. The clasp is present, but the pin is broken and partially lost. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
