Description

*British, WWI, RAF Pilot's Wings, Sweetheart Brooch, Gilt Brass Wings*

WWI gilt-brass RAF sweetheart wings, c.1918, with crowned RAF monogram. 4.5 cm wide.

A charming First World War Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, dating to around 1918. Formed in gilt brass, the brooch takes the shape of outstretched wings surmounted by the King’s Crown, with the intertwined RAF monogram at the centre. The reverse retains its original pin fitting. Measuring 4.5 cm wide by 1.7 cm tall, this example represents the style of keepsake jewellery purchased privately and proudly worn by wives, mothers, and sweethearts of serving airmen.

Historical Note:
The RAF was officially established on 1 April 1918 through the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Sweetheart brooches were popular tokens of affection during this period, often worn to show support and connection to loved ones serving in the newly formed force. Gilt brass versions such as this would have been widely available from jewellers and regimental outfitters.

*Condition*
The brooch shows honest age with wear to the gilt finish and some small areas of verdigris patina to the wings and monogram. The pin fitting to the reverse remains intact though shows oxidisation. Overall, a well-preserved WWI example with good definition to the detail. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
