Description

*British, WWI, Royal Flying Corps (RFC) Sweetheart Brooch, Enamelled*

A scarce First World War Royal Flying Corps sweetheart brooch, circular in form, measuring 2.8cm in diameter. The design features a laurel wreath surmounted by a red enamel King’s Crown, enclosing the intertwined “RFC” monogram picked out in blue enamel. Made in gilt brass with remains of the original gilding still visible, the brooch is fitted with a simple pin-back fastening to the reverse.

Historical Note:
The Royal Flying Corps (RFC), founded in 1912, served as the air arm of the British Army during the First World War. The corps played a pivotal role in reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and air combat, before merging with the Royal Naval Air Service in April 1918 to form the Royal Air Force.

Sweetheart brooches such as this were privately purchased by servicemen and gifted to wives, fiancées, or family members as emblems of pride and service. Enamelled versions are especially desirable, being of finer quality than the more common plain brass examples.

*Condition*
The brooch shows wear consistent with age, with much of the original gilt surface now lost and patches of verdigris evident to the reverse. The enamel to the “RFC” monogram and the crown retains good colour, though with minor chipping and surface wear. The pin fitting is present but corroded and somewhat fragile. A well-worn yet authentic example with strong character. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
