*British, WWI, Royal Flying Corps (RFC) Sweetheart Brooch, Pilot's Wings, Gilt & Enamel*
A charming original First World War Royal Flying Corps sweetheart brooch, finely detailed with outstretched gilt brass wings, crowned centre, and white enamel roundel bearing the initials "RFC". The wings are enamelled in deep blue, with red enamel detail to the crown. Complete with its original pin-back fitting to the reverse. Measures 4.4cm wide by 1.5cm tall.
Historical Note:
The Royal Flying Corps was formed in 1912 as the air arm of the British Army and played a pivotal role in reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and aerial combat during the Great War. Sweetheart brooches like this example were popular mementoes, gifted to loved ones as a symbol of pride and connection to the serviceman’s branch. In 1918, the RFC merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force.
Condition Report:
In fair to good condition for age. Enamel intact with only minor wear and slight loss, particularly to the crown. Gilt brass showing age-related patina and oxidation, particularly on the reverse, with some verdigris present to the pin fittings. Pin-back mechanism intact and functional.
