Description

*British, WWI, Royal Flying Corps (RFC) Sweetheart Brooch, Enamelled*

Scarce WWI Royal Flying Corps sweetheart brooch – a personal token of wartime service, enamelled and retaining fine period character.

A First World War Royal Flying Corps sweetheart brooch, measuring 5.2 cm wide by 2.2 cm tall. The design features a gilt brass propeller with central laurel wreath, surmounted by the King’s Crown, the crown enamelled in red and the RFC monogram in dark blue enamel. Reverse with original pin.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased items, often gifted by serving men to wives, fiancées, or family members as tokens of pride and remembrance. The Royal Flying Corps (RFC), established in 1912, played a pivotal role in reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and aerial combat during the First World War. In April 1918, the RFC merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force, making RFC insignia short-lived and scarcer than their later RAF equivalents. Enamelled sweetheart brooches are particularly sought after, symbolising the personal connection between service personnel and their loved ones at home.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its gilt finish with age-related toning. Some losses to the red enamel of the crown and blue enamel of the RFC monogram. Reverse fittings intact. Light surface wear and patina consistent with age. A well-preserved and honest example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
