Description

*British, WWII-Cold War, Royal Navy HMS Loch Fyne Sweetheart Brooch, Enamel & Gilt*

A charming WWII Royal Navy HMS Loch Fyne enamel sweetheart brooch – a fine naval memento with strong enamel colours.

A fine gilt and enamel Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Loch Fyne. The brooch displays the ship’s badge: a raised gilt arm issuing from the sea, holding a branch, set against alternating blue and white enamel wavy stripes. The name “H.M.S. LOCH FYNE” is picked out on a blue enamel scroll beneath. Measuring 5.2cm wide by 2.7cm tall, with an original pin-back fitting to the reverse.

Historical Note:
HMS Loch Fyne was a Loch-class frigate, launched in 1944 and named after the Scottish sea loch on the west coast of Argyll and Bute. Designed primarily for anti-submarine duties, she served with the Royal Navy in the closing stages of WWII and remained active throughout the Cold War era, undergoing several modernisations. Like many ships of her class, she played a key role in escort duties and NATO exercises, reflecting Britain’s continued maritime presence in the post-war period.

Sweetheart brooches were treasured tokens, privately purchased by sailors and given to wives, mothers, or sweethearts as symbols of affection and pride in service. Sweetheart jewellery such as this became especially popular during both World Wars, serving as poignant keepsakes and reminders of absent loved ones serving at sea. This example retains excellent detail with bright enamel and a rich gilt finish.

*Condition*
The brooch presents well, with strong enamel colours and good surface detail to the gilt badge. The bar shows areas of wear and age patina. The reverse retains the original pin fitting, which is intact but displays oxidation and verdigris spotting consistent with age. Overall, a good period example, displaying very well from the front. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
