*British, WWII Era, RAF Sweetheart Items Group, incl. Lucite Ring, Pendant and Oldbury Women’s Spitfire Fund Pin*
A charming WWII-era Royal Air Force group comprising a heart-shaped lucite sweetheart pendant containing miniature RAF eagle and crown devices; a wartime lucite ring set with a brass RAF eagle; and a scarce enamelled Spitfire-shaped fundraising badge for the Oldbury Women’s (Spitfire Fund). The badge retains much of its blue and silver finish with wear consistent with age. Together these items form a representative small collection of RAF home-front and loved-one keepsakes typical of 1940–45.
Historical Note:
During the Second World War, RAF personnel often purchased or gifted sweetheart jewellery—small, inexpensive tokens incorporating the service emblem, worn by wives, fiancées and family members as visible signs of pride and connection. Lucite (Perspex or Plexiglass), salvaged from damaged aircraft canopies, was commonly repurposed into rings, pendants and brooches, making pieces like the included ring particularly resonant. Fundraising aircraft badges such as the Oldbury Women’s Spitfire Fund example were sold to support local wartime appeals, with town and borough groups striving to “buy” Spitfires through community donations. These were worn proudly on coats and lapels as symbols of solidarity with the RAF and the fighter effort of the Battle of Britain and beyond.
*Condition*
Heart-shaped sweetheart pendant clear with expected light surface marks; embedded crown and eagle with appropriate age toning. Lucite ring retains good transparency with period RAF eagle attached through original wire fixing, minor age-related scuffs. Oldbury Women’s Spitfire Fund brooch shows enamel losses and light corrosion typical of service but remains structurally sound with a firm pin. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
