A scarce WWII RAF Observer sweetheart brooch in gilt and blue enamel – a fine emblem of service and remembrance.
A fine Second World War Royal Air Force Observer’s sweetheart brooch, measuring 3.7cm wide by 1.1cm tall. The brooch is formed in gilt metal with a single wing and an enamelled “O” in bright blue to the left, denoting the aircrew Observer brevet. Complete with pin-back fitting to reverse.
History Note:
During the Second World War, RAF Observer brevets were issued to trained aircrew who served as reconnaissance specialists, bomb aimers, and later navigators, before the dedicated “N” and “B” wings were introduced. Sweetheart brooches were smaller, jeweller-made versions of official insignia, designed for wives, fiancées and family members to wear as a token of pride and remembrance. The gilt and enamel design was popular for civilian wear, offering both durability and a touch of colour. The Observer wing, with its distinctive “O,” is a scarcer variant compared to the more commonly encountered pilot and general RAF brooches.
*Condition*
The brooch remains in good overall condition with the gilt finish intact and enamel retaining bright colour. Minor rubbing and small patches of surface wear consistent with age and use. Pin and clasp to reverse remain functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
