Description

*British, WWII, RAF Sweetheart Brooch - Pilot's Wings, Enamel, King’s Crown*

A classic WWII RAF enamel sweetheart brooch – a proud token of wartime service and sacrifice.

A charming World War II Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, measuring 5.5cm wide by 1.8cm tall. The brooch is crafted in base white metal with enamel decoration, formed as outstretched pilot’s wings with a central blue enamel roundel bearing the letters RAF, surmounted by a red-and-white enamel King’s Crown. The wings are filled with white enamel feathering. To the reverse is a simple pin and clasp fitting.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased items, gifted by servicemen to wives, fiancées, or family members as a token of affection and pride during their wartime service. This example, displaying the King’s Crown, dates to the reign of George VI and firmly places it within the World War II period (1939–1945). Such pieces were widely worn on civilian clothing and became cherished symbols of loyalty and remembrance for those serving in the RAF.

*Condition*
The brooch remains in fair to good condition overall. Enamel detailing is intact but shows minor age-related wear, particularly some cracking to the white enamel of the wings and slight surface rubbing to the blue central roundel. The red of the crown is still vibrant. The reverse shows expected oxidation and wear to the metalwork. The original pin and clasp are present and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
