Description

*British, WWII, Royal Air Force Sweetheart Brooch, RAF Pilot’s Wings Design*

A WWII period Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, finely cast in silver-plated metal, modelled after the RAF pilot’s brevet with the crowned “RAF” monogram set within a laurel wreath and outstretched wings. The brooch is fitted with a horizontal bar and clasp to the reverse. Measuring 5.3cm wide by 1.7cm tall, this is a classic wartime example intended for a wife, fiancée, mother, or sister of a serving airman.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches became a cherished tradition during both World Wars, with servicemen presenting them to loved ones as tokens of affection and service pride. The RAF examples were especially popular from 1918 onwards, reflecting the glamour and danger associated with flying. Produced in a variety of forms and materials—sterling silver, enamel, gilt, or plated base metal—these brooches were widely worn on the home front throughout WWII. The present example, in silver-plated metal, would have been an affordable yet sentimental choice purchased by many RAF personnel.

*Condition*
The brooch is in good original condition. The front retains strong detail with clear RAF lettering, crown, and feathered wing design. Some surface rubbing to the high points and expected wear to the plating. The reverse shows age-related tarnishing and green oxidation around the clasp area. The pin and clasp mechanism remain intact and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
