*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Argonaut, Sweetheart Brooch, Enamel and Gilt*
A scarce WWII Royal Navy HMS Argonaut sweetheart brooch – a personal memento of one of the Dido-class cruisers that survived some of the fiercest naval actions of the war.
A fine WWII-period Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Argonaut, measuring 5.3cm x 2.8cm. The gilt and enamel badge is mounted to a horizontal bar brooch fitting, with the ship’s crest at centre: Jason with the Golden Fleece aboard a galley, above stylised waves. The upper scroll, beneath the Naval Crown, bears the name “Argonaut”, with a further legend “H.M.S. Argonaut” in blue enamel below.
Historical Note:
Several Royal Navy ships have carried the name HMS Argonaut, after Jason and the Argonauts of Greek mythology. The example most associated with this style of sweetheart brooch is the Dido-class light cruiser HMS Argonaut (commissioned 1942). She saw extensive WWII service, including Arctic convoys, Operation Torch (the Allied invasion of North Africa), and operations in the Mediterranean where she was torpedoed twice in 1942, but survived to fight on until the war’s end.
Sweetheart brooches such as this became especially popular during both World Wars as intimate tokens of loyalty and remembrance, often worn at home while a loved one served overseas.
*Condition*
The brooch retains good detail with much of its original red and blue enamel present, though there is enamel loss and wear to the red field. The gilt finish has softened with age, with oxidation and green verdigris evident, particularly to the reverse and bar fitting. The pin remains intact, though showing natural age-related patina.
