Description

*British, WWII era , Royal Navy, HMS Leander Sweetheart Brooch, Enamel & Gilt*

A fine Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Leander, measuring 3.9cm in diameter. The gilt and enamel badge is set within a ship’s wheel motif, with the vessel’s crest at centre. The crest is picked out in gilt and dark blue enamel, showing a vertical spear flanked by two clubs, surmounted by a naval crown, with the name scroll “H.M.S. LEANDER” below. The reverse retains its original pin fitting.

Historical Note:
HMS Leander was a Leander-class light cruiser, launched in 1931 and commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1933. She initially served with the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, later transferring to the newly formed Royal New Zealand Navy in 1941. During the Second World War, Leander operated in the Indian Ocean and Pacific theatres, taking part in convoy escort duties, patrols, and engagements against Japanese and Vichy French forces. In July 1943, during the Battle of Kolombangara, she was heavily damaged by a Japanese torpedo but survived, eventually being withdrawn from frontline service.

Sweetheart brooches such as this were worn by the wives, fiancées, and loved ones of serving sailors, acting as personal mementos of service and affection during wartime. This brooch is a tangible reminder of the ship’s distinguished service and of the deeply personal connection between the Royal Navy and the families left at home.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish and rich blue enamel, with only minor surface wear from age and handling. Some light verdigris is visible to the reverse, consistent with age. The pin clasp remains intact and functional. Overall, a well-preserved example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
