Description

*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Sikh, Enamel & Gilt Sweetheart Brooch*

A scarce Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Sikh, measuring 5.2 cm x 2.7 cm. The brooch is finely detailed in gilt metal with red enamel, showing the ship’s badge of a golden lion on a red field, surmounted by a naval crown. The name “SIKH” is displayed above, with “H.M.S. SIKH” on the scroll below. Fitted to a horizontal bar brooch mount with pin fastening to reverse.

These brooches were privately purchased tokens, commonly presented by sailors to wives, mothers, or sweethearts as keepsakes. Enamelled examples, particularly for destroyers lost in action, are especially sought after by naval collectors.

Historical Note:
HMS Sikh was a Tribal-class destroyer, launched in 1937 and commissioned in 1938. The Tribals were larger and more heavily armed than preceding destroyers, intended to counter the large destroyers then being built by other navies. HMS Sikh served extensively in the early years of the Second World War. She operated in the Mediterranean, taking part in the Battle of Cape Bon and other major fleet actions. Her most notable service came during Operation Agreement in September 1942 – a combined raid on Tobruk. In the course of this action, Sikh came under heavy fire from coastal artillery and Axis aircraft. She was badly damaged, immobilised, and eventually sank on 14 September 1942. Many of her crew were killed or captured.

Sweetheart brooches such as this were widely produced during both World Wars, serving as poignant mementos of service and sacrifice, often treasured by the families of men at sea.

Because HMS Sikh was lost in action, contemporary commemorative and sweetheart items relating to her are scarce and hold strong collector interest.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilding and vibrant red enamel, with expected light surface wear. Some rubbing to gilt detail, and the pin shows areas of corrosion and oxidation consistent with age. Enamel remains largely intact and bright. The clasp mechanism is present and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
