Description

*British, WWII, Royal Navy Sweetheart Badge, HMS Carlisle, Enamel Horseshoe “Good Luck”*

A fine WWII period Royal Navy sweetheart badge for HMS Carlisle. The brooch is cast in brass with gilded finish and detailed enamel, fashioned in the form of a lucky horseshoe with the words GOOD LUCK in white enamel. At the centre sits the ship’s crest, a red Maltese cross with a central gold roundel, all set within a gilt shield and surmounted by a naval crown with HMS CARLISLE picked out in blue enamel below. The reverse retains its original pin fitting. The badge measures approximately 2.8cm x 3cm.

Historical Note:
HMS Carlisle was a Ceres-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy, launched in 1918 and active during the Second World War. Initially serving in the Mediterranean and China Station between the wars, she was converted in 1939 into an anti-aircraft cruiser. During the war she was heavily engaged in the Mediterranean theatre, providing critical escort duties and air defence during convoy operations. In October 1943, while supporting Allied landings in the Dodecanese, Carlisle was severely damaged by German air attack and declared a constructive total loss. Though never repaired, she remained afloat as an accommodation hulk until the end of the war.

Sweetheart badges were small brooches privately purchased during both World Wars, often enamelled with regimental or ship insignia, and worn by wives, fiancées, and family members as a token of pride and remembrance.

*Condition*
The badge is in overall good condition with age-related wear. Enamel detail remains clear and colourful, though there is slight chipping by the “G” in GOOD LUCK and some minor surface marks. The gilded finish shows light rubbing consistent with age. The reverse has its original pin, with expected tarnish and signs of use. Please see photographs as part of the condition report..
