Description

*British, WWII Royal Navy Sweetheart Brooch – HMS Leander, Horseshoe “Good Luck” Design*

A charming WWII-period Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Leander, measuring 2.7cm x 3cm. The brooch is formed as a gilt metal and enamel badge, featuring a horseshoe design with the words “GOOD LUCK” in white enamel, enclosing the ship’s crest at centre. The crest of HMS Leander is picked out in gilt and blue enamel, showing the spear and club emblem with the ship’s name “H.M.S. Leander” in bold blue scroll beneath a naval crown.

Historical Note:
HMS Leander was a Leander-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy, launched in 1931. She saw extensive service during the Second World War, including operations in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. In 1941 she was transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy, where she became one of its first major warships. HMS Leander was active in escort duties and convoy protection, playing an important role in Allied operations before being damaged in action at the Battle of Kolombangara in July 1943.

Sweetheart brooches like this were privately purchased keepsakes, often presented to wives, sweethearts, and family members by sailors as a token of affection and good fortune during wartime service. The horseshoe motif was especially popular as a symbol of luck and protection.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish and vibrant blue enamel to the crest. There is an enamel chip to the white horseshoe by the letter “L” in LUCK, along with some surface wear and tarnishing to the reverse, consistent with age and handling. The pin and clasp are present and functional, though with expected oxidation. Overall, a well-preserved example of a scarce wartime naval sweetheart brooch. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
