*British, WWII era, Royal Navy Sweetheart Brooch, HMS Loch Fyne, Silvered & Enamel*
A fine Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Loch Fyne, measuring 5.2cm x 2.7cm. The brooch features the ship’s crest in silvered metal and enamel, mounted to a horizontal bar brooch fitting. The crest shows a mailed arm holding a branch against a field of alternating dark blue and white enamel waves, surmounted by a naval crown. Below is a blue enamel scroll inscribed H.M.S. LOCH FYNE. These brooches were worn as tokens of affection and pride, typically by wives, fiancées, or family members of serving sailors during wartime.
Historical Note:
HMS Loch Fyne (K429) was a Loch-class frigate of the Royal Navy, named after the sea loch on Scotland’s west coast. She was launched in 1944 and saw active service during the closing stages of the Second World War, carrying out anti-submarine patrols and convoy escort duties. After the war, she remained in commission through the 1950s and 1960s, serving in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, before being sold for scrap in 1970.
Sweetheart brooches such as this were highly popular in both World Wars, serving as personal keepsakes and morale-boosting symbols of connection to a loved one at sea. They are now collected as evocative mementoes of naval history.
*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its silvered finish, with only minor rubbing from age and handling. The reverse shows age patina and spotting consistent with period use. The bar fitting and clasp are intact. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
