*British, WWII, Royal Navy Sweetheart Brooch – HMS Royal Sovereign, “Good Luck” Horseshoe, Enamel & Gilt*
A fine WWII period Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Royal Sovereign, measuring 2.8cm by 3cm. The design features a white enamel horseshoe inscribed GOOD LUCK, a popular wartime symbol, framing the gilt and enamel crest of HMS Royal Sovereign. The crest depicts a King’s Crown with the British Lion proudly standing atop, above a blue enamel scroll inscribed H.M.S. ROYAL SOVEREIGN. Fitted with its original pin-back fastening to the reverse.
Historical Note:
HMS Royal Sovereign was a Revenge-class battleship of the Royal Navy, launched in 1915 and commissioned in 1916. She served through both World Wars, taking part in Atlantic and Mediterranean convoy escort duties during the Second World War. In 1944 she was loaned to the Soviet Navy under Lend-Lease, where she served as Arkhangelsk until her return in 1949. Sweetheart brooches such as this were purchased by sailors or their families, and worn by wives, fiancées, or mothers as keepsakes and symbols of pride in their loved one’s service.
*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish with good colour to the enamel, showing only light age wear. The reverse shows expected patina with some age toning to the pin and mount. Overall, a well-preserved and attractive example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
