Description

*British, WWII era, Royal Navy Sweetheart Brooch – HMS Scarborough, Silvered & Enamel*

A fine WWII era Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Scarborough. The brooch is mounted on a horizontal bar fitting and measures approximately 5.2cm x 2.8cm. The crest is picked out in bright red and blue enamel with silvered detail, depicting a medieval castle above stylised waves. Above the shield is a naval crown, beneath which is the ship’s name “Scarborough.” A dark blue enamel scroll beneath carries the ship’s motto Tutus Si Fortis (“Safe if Brave”).

Historical Note:
HMS Scarborough was a Hastings-class sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in 1930 and serving throughout the Second World War. She was engaged in Atlantic convoy escort duties during the Battle of the Atlantic, protecting merchant shipping against U-boat attack, and later undertook service in the West Indies and South Atlantic. Sweetheart brooches such as this were purchased by sailors and given to wives, mothers, or sweethearts as a keepsake and token of affection during wartime separation.

*Condition*
The brooch remains in good overall condition with bright enamel detail. Minor signs of age and light wear to the reverse and pin, but the colours remain strong. The pin and clasp are intact and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
