Description

*British, WWII, SOE No. 8 “Ball Buster” Mine, Relic Condition, Inert*

A rare Special Operations Executive (SOE) No. 8 “Ball Buster” anti-personnel mine in relic condition, completely inert. The steel tubular body retains its original washer-like flange and hollow core, with corrosion and pitting evident across all surfaces. The striker hole remains visible, with the original tapered body intact though degraded. This example shows clear ground-recovery oxidation consistent with long-term burial. Approx 15.2cm long.

Historical Note:
The SOE No. 8 mine, colloquially nicknamed the “Ball Buster,” was a small anti-personnel and sabotage charge used during the Second World War. Designed for covert placement by agents and resistance operatives, it was compact, easily concealed, and highly effective for disabling vehicles or machinery. Activation was typically pressure-initiated via an internal striker mechanism. Surviving examples are scarce due to the nature of their use, with most being expended in operations.

Condition Report:
Relic condition throughout. Extensive corrosion, surface pitting, and loss of original surface finish. Metalwork stable but degraded. Hollow core present, no explosive content remains, safe and inert. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
