Description

*Canada, 1964, HMS Okanagan (SS-73) Keel-Laying Commemorative Wooden Bowl – With Inset 1964 Canadian 50-Cent Piece*

A scarce Royal Canadian Navy submarine-yard presentation bowl commemorating the keel laying of H.M.C. Submarine SS-73 in 1964—the boat that would be commissioned as HMCS Okanagan (Oberon-class). These bowls were typically produced as limited one-off souvenirs for senior shipyard staff, naval officers, or dignitaries attending the ceremony.

Beautifully turned from a single piece of hardwood, the interior is fitted with a metal presentation ring engraved:

“1964 • KEEL LAYING • H.M.C. SUBMARINE SS-73”

At the centre is an original 1964 Canadian 50-cent coin, displaying the pre-1967 heraldic coat of arms—an excellent period touch used specifically because the coin matched the year of keel laying.

Measurements: Top diameter: 14.4 cm. Height: 6 cm. Base foot: 8.8 cm

Historical Note:
HMCS Okanagan was the third of Canada’s Oberon-class submarines, laid down in 1964 at Chatham Dockyard, UK, and commissioned in 1968. The Oberon class served as the backbone of Canadian submarine operations throughout the Cold War, famed for their quiet running and high intelligence-gathering value. Keel-laying commemoratives such as this bowl are notably uncommon, especially those incorporating a dated national coin and yard-engraved metal ring.

*Condition*
The bowl retains a rich, warm varnish with expected handling wear and minor surface marks from age. A stable crack is present on one side (as photographed). Metal ring shows attractive period toning, and the coin is original to the piece with natural oxidisation. The base shows typical workshop finishing marks. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
