~ Chinese Finely Carved Dark Green Contemporary Jade Buddha Pendant ~
A rectangular nephrite jade pendant or plaque of deep, dark green tone (often referred to in the trade as "spinach" jade), carved in low relief on one face with a seated figure of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, depicted within a halo/aureole, seated with flowing robes and holding an attribute (possibly a ruyi sceptre or lotus stem) in one hand. The reverse is carved with a panel of Chinese characters in low relief, likely a blessing, prayer, or auspicious inscription associated with the figure. The plaque is pierced with a small suspension hole at the top edge for wearing as a pendant. The stone has a smooth, even, dark green colour throughout with a soft polish.
Historical Context
Guanyin is one of the most widely depicted deities in Chinese Buddhist and folk religious art, venerated as a bodhisattva of mercy and compassion, and jade pendants and plaques depicting her are among the most enduringly popular forms of Chinese devotional and amuletic jewellery. Dark green "spinach" nephrite of this type became particularly fashionable from the 19th century onward and has continued in production into the present day, valued for its even, rich colour as a more affordable alternative to white or pale celadon nephrite. Pendants combining a devotional image on the obverse with a blessing or scripture-style inscription on the reverse are a long-standing format intended both as personal protective amulets and as gifts marking auspicious occasions. Given the smooth, even modern-style finish and the type of stone here, this piece is most consistent with later production, likely 20th century or contemporary manufacture in the traditional style, rather than an antique piece; no maker's mark or definitive provenance is present to suggest otherwise.
