~ Chinese Nephrite Jade Carving Of A Mythical Pei-Yao #3 ~
A finely hand carved jade figure of a mythical lion type creature.
This mythical creature goes by different names in literarture: Bixie - a kind of unicorn with rearward pointing horn, Chilin – a creature with a lion head, wings and bifurcated tail. In Cantonese it is ‘Pei Yao’.
The animal is regarded as the protector of the house and family. Because of this role, many Chinese people have one or more of them in their home.
The nephrite jade is a lovely deep green colour with black patches and is expertly carved.
It is in the traditional old style but is of contemporary manufacture.

The piece measures 3 inches (7.6 cm) long by 1.2 inches (3 cm) deep and has a height of 1.8 inches (4.5 cm).
It weighs 100g.
