*Colombian, Dated 1978, 7.62×51mm NATO Brass Cartridge Case Trench Art Lighter, Industria Militar (IM)*
A distinctive and collectible brass trench art lighter constructed from a fired 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge case, headstamped IM 78, identifying manufacture by Industria Militar (Indumil), Colombia, in 1978. These novelty “bullet lighters” were commonly produced by soldiers, armourers, or workshop craftsmen using spent military cartridge cases, creating practical souvenir pieces with strong military association.
This example is formed from a full brass cartridge body with removable upper section containing the lighter mechanism and flint wheel assembly, retaining its original pointed projectile section to give the classic full-round appearance. The proportions—approximately 7.8cm tall and 1.2cm diameter—closely match the standard 7.62×51mm NATO service cartridge, widely used in military rifles and machine guns throughout the Cold War period.
The IM headstamp denotes Colombian state military production, and examples bearing South American military headstamps are encountered less frequently on the UK and European collector market than British, NATO, or U.S. examples, making them a more unusual variant. While often referred to as trench art, later examples such as this were frequently bench-made by military personnel or produced as barracks souvenirs during periods of internal conflict rather than frontline wartime manufacture.
An attractive Cold War military collectible combining ammunition history with practical period novelty design, and an unusual addition to any trench art, militaria, or ammunition collection.
Approx. Measurements – Height: 7.8 cm. Diameter: 1.2 cm.
History Note:
Industria Militar (Indumil) was Colombia’s principal state arms manufacturer, supplying ammunition and weapons for the Colombian armed forces throughout the Cold War. The 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge became one of the most widely used military rounds of the post-war period, chambered in rifles such as the FN FAL, G3, and numerous machine guns. Cartridge-case lighters such as this became popular among servicemen worldwide as practical keepsakes, often made from spent service ammunition.
