Description

*Continental, c.1750–1780, Hunting Cutlass (Hirschfänger) with Brass Shell Guard and Antler Grip*

An attractive mid-18th-century Continental hunting cutlass (Hirschfänger) featuring a robust, single-edged blade of flattened diamond section, forged with a long shallow fuller to each side, measuring approximately 41 cm (16 in) in length and about 0.5 cm in width, running two-thirds of the blade’s length before tapering toward a short double-edged spear-point tip. This upper portion of the blade is sharpened on both edges, a feature designed to assist in thrusting or finishing game. Both sides of the blade are struck near the forte with a crisp fleur-de-lis motif, likely of French or Solingen influence. The blade shows age patination with areas of fine pitting and dark toning consistent with 18th-century manufacture.

The hilt comprises a cast brass guard with fluted scallop-shell counter-guard, a downturned quillon with rounded finial, and a plain knuckle-bow flowing to a domed, fluted pommel. The grip is a single section of polished natural antler, displaying a rich honey-brown tone and smooth wear from handling. The overall proportions and detailing are typical of Germanic and French Rococo hunting swords of the period. No scabbard present.

Measurements: Overall length: approx. 64 cm (25¼ in). Blade length: approx. 50 cm (19¾ in).

Historical Note:
During the 18th century, the Hirschfänger was both a hunting sidearm and a gentleman’s badge of rank. Officers and noble huntsmen across the German states, Austria, and France carried these elegant weapons as part of their outdoor and court attire. The brass shell guard evolved from earlier small-sword patterns, reflecting the decorative tastes of the Rococo era while remaining practical for dispatching game. The fleur-de-lis engraving suggests French manufacture or Continental export from Solingen for the French market. Such weapons were also worn ceremonially by foresters and jagers in the service of noble households.

*Condition*
Blade exhibits even grey patination with isolated patches of pitting and age staining. Brass hilt with rich tone and light verdigris; grip tight with minor age fissures but structurally sound. Overall very good untouched condition for period; no scabbard. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
