Description

*Danish made for Colombian import, c.1958, Madsen M58 Knife Bayonet, with Original Scabbard and Frog*

21cm blade, 32cm overall

Manufactured during the 1950s by Dansk Industri Syndikat, Compagni Madsen A/S" (DISA), this knife bayonet was primarily intended for the export sales of the .30-06 caliber Madsen Lightweight Military Rifle Model 1947, designated as M58 by Colombia.

The Danish Madsen, introduced in 1951, marked the conclusion of newly-designed bolt-action infantry rifles. Despite its obsolescence upon entering the market, the rifle boasted features such as a muzzle brake and rubber buttplate to manage recoil, a windage-adjustable aperture rear sight, and a sling modeled after the U.S. M1907. This distinctive double-edged knife bayonet, showcased in the photos of their marketing brochures (pictured), was part of the package.

The sole manufacturing contract for these bayonets was with Colombia in 1958, resulting in the production of around 6,500 rifles (serial numbers reported from 0013 to 6493). Most of these rifles were placed in storage and later surplus without ever being issued. This unmarked bayonet with a pristine blade suggests that it may be one of the unissued units.

Characterized by a straightforward design, the bayonet features a dark blackened pommel with TO slot and crossguard with muzzle ring, wooden grips secured to the blade tang by two screw bolts. Double-edged blade left in its natural state, without any finishing treatment. Sheet steel scabbard painted black.

*Condition*
The blade is immaculate and the grip has some signs of storage wear - with a few minor dings and scratches . The scabbard fits securely and the frog is worn but intact and a likely later addition. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
