Description

*Dutch M1895 Infantry Bayonet with Leather Scabbard by Hembrug*

WW2 Dutch T-Back Sword Bayonet for the Geweer M1895 rifle. The Geweer M. 95, also known to collectors as the Dutch Mannlicher, was the service rifle of the armed forces of the Netherlands between 1895 and 1940 which replaced the obsolete Beaumont-Vitali M1871/88. The attachment system is very similar to that used on the British Pattern 1888 bayonet.

The bayonet is marked HEMBRUG on blade. Dutch inspection mark Crown over Z on the blade and again on the pommel. Serial number 3238 LL on the cross bar. Leather scabbard serial number 16 V 3477 with 407 stamped across it. The blade measures 350mm 470 overall. The overall scabbard length, including the integral leather belt hanger, is 550mm.

Prior to 1905, M1895 bayonet production was by Steyr, W.K.C., and Coppel. In 1904, production began at Artillerie Inrichtingen in the Netherlands and continued until the Germans overran Holland in 1940. Early examples had a hooked lower crosspiece, but this was deleted beginning in 1900. Many M1895 bayonets are marked “Hembrug.” This was the trademark of Artillerie Inrichtingen, in Zaandam, referring to a swing bridge across the North Sea Canal that provided railroad access to the factory.

*Condition*
This Dutch Bayonet is in excellent condition retaining a blued finish to the blade with no nicks or pitting. The grip is in good condition with signs of age related wear and tear. The push button works well. The scabbard fits well and is in good condition with all its original rivets and the expected age related wear and tear, there is a small crack to the leather by the throat. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
