Description

~ Early 20th Century Home Fleet Reserve Leather Bound Telescope ~

A nice quality single draw telescope from the Home Fleet reserve.

The telescope is made of a white metal, probably steel.

It has a leather bound body with leather protective end cap.

The telescope features an extendable sun visor to the end and is engraved to the barrel ‘Home Fleet Reserve’.

~ Dimensions ~

The objective lens has a diameter of 3.3cm.

The telescope measures 45cm (17 ½ inches).

When fully extended it measures 60cm (23 ¾ inches) and with visor extended 64cm (25 ¼ inches)

It weighs 605g.

~ Condition ~

The body and leather are in a good condition with only light wear (small scratches etc) from age and use.

There are few little marks to one of the lenses but despite this the image is crisp and clear.

The telescope is missing the screw on eye piece/cup. The only problem this really causes is that it’s harder to grasp the barrel in order to extend it.

Overall this is a lovely item and is in very good order for its age.

~ The Home Fleet ~

The Home Fleet was a fleet of the Royal Navy that operated in the United Kingdom's territorial waters from 1902 with intervals until 1967. Before the First World War, it consisted of the four Port Guard ships. During the First World War, it comprised some of the older ships of the Royal Navy. During the Second World War, it was the Royal Navy's main battle force in European waters.

There was no Home Fleet between 1905 and 1907 remaining ships at a lesser state of readiness were split into three reserve divisions: Devonport Division, Nore Division, and Portsmouth Division.
