Description

*European, c17th–18th Century, Heavy Executioner’s Axe with Broad Forged Crescent Blade*

A striking and substantial executioner-type axe, of medieval style but likely later, featuring a broad, heavily forged iron head and a robust wooden shaft. The head measures an impressive 34 cm across, with a wide 21.5 cm cutting edge, designed to deliver a single, decisive blow. The oval wooden haft measures 83.5 cm in length (3 x 4 cm cross-section), bringing the total length to 92 cm overall. The axe weighs a hefty 9 lbs 6 oz (just under 4.5 kg), underscoring its imposing presence.

The iron head shows deep forging lines, heavy pitting, and layered dark patination indicative of considerable age and honest wear. Its broad, sweeping profile is consistent with continental European executioner axes from the 16th to 18th centuries, though this piece lacks formal marks or armoury stamps and is therefore classified as an “executioner-type” or ceremonial axe rather than a fully documented medieval execution axe.

The haft is a later replacement, as evidenced by the pinned wedge construction visible at the top and the circular end stamp, which suggest a 19th or early 20th century fitting. The small circular stamp at the haft end does not appear to correspond to any known arsenal or period maker’s mark and is most likely a later fitter or collector’s mark.

*Condition*
The head exhibits heavy surface corrosion, forging striations, and minor edge losses consistent with age. The wooden haft is solid, showing age-related wear, handling marks, and a clear later mounting method at the top. The overall construction remains strong and display-ready. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
