Description

~ Framed Artists Proof Print Of The Battle Of St. Vincent By Harold Wyllie ~

Both Harold Wyllie and his father William Lionel Wyllie were noted maritime artists and helped to preserve HMS Victory in the 1930's.

It is signed in pencil by the artist to the lower left.

The ships depicted from left to right are Goliath '74 (cannns), Egmont '74, Victory 100, Principe De Austurias 112 and Oriente '74.

It is presented in its original single mounted and glazed frame.

It was published in May 1928 by Arthur Jackmann.

There is an old dealers label for Vicars Brothers Ltd - Fine Art Dealers - of Old Bond Street, London to the reverse declaring it as the artists proof.

The Battle of Cape St. Vincent (14 February 1797) was one of the opening battles of the Anglo-Spanish War (1796-1808), as part of the French Revolutionary Wars, where a British fleet under Admiral Sir John Jervis defeated a greatly superior Spanish fleet under Admiral Don Jose de Cordoba y Rams near Cape St. Vincent, Portugal.
