Description

*French, WW1 c. 1912, 2nd Pattern Mle 1892 Berthier Sword Bayonet*

French Model 1892 Berthier sword bayonet, second crosspiece type, for the 8 mm Berthier carbines.

Fitted with the second-type crosspiece, identifiable by the widened muzzle ring extending rearwards over the grip scales, and retaining the fully hooked lower quillon. The hilt is fitted with two-piece wooden grip scales, riveted. The blade is of correct long, narrow M1892 form with fullers. The quillon is stamped with the serial number 618254, applied in the standard French manner.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 40 cm. Overall length: 51.5 cm.

Historical Note:
The Model 1892 sword bayonet was adopted alongside the Berthier series of carbines for cavalry, artillery, and support troops, including the Mle 1890 Cavalry Carbine, Mle 1892 Artillery Mousqueton, and later the Mle 1916 Mousqueton. Its long blade reflected late-19th-century French doctrine, emphasising reach and thrusting ability for mounted and support arms.

Early production examples were fitted with first-pattern composite grip scales, which were replaced from approximately 1905 by wooden grips. In 1912, service experience led to the introduction of a revised crosspiece with a widened muzzle ring extending over the grip, strengthening the hilt assembly. Bayonets of this configuration were produced and issued through the First World War, often retaining the hooked quillon until later wartime simplifications resulted in its abbreviated form. Examples such as this represent the standard early-war fighting configuration of the Model 1892 bayonet.

*Condition*
Blade shows honest service wear with scattered light pitting and surface staining consistent with age. Fullers remain clear and the blade profile is correct. Hilt components are tight with no looseness to the crossguard or grips. Wooden grip scales are sound, showing expected handling marks and age patina. The quillon retains its original hooked form with clear serial stamping. Overall a well-preserved and original example. No scabbard. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
