*German, Mauser C96 “Broomhandle” Style Cleaning Rod / Replacement Cleaning Rod for Wooden Holster Stock*
An attractive Mauser C96 “Broomhandle” style pistol cleaning rod, of the correct long slender pattern designed for use with the famous C96 self-loading pistol and its wooden shoulder-stock holster. While clearly made to the standard C96 form, the absence of maker’s marks or military inspection stamps suggests this is more likely a later replacement or reproduction example rather than a confirmed original Imperial German issue piece.
The piece consists of a turned hardwood handle of classic tapered “broomhandle” form, fitted with a long steel cleaning rod terminating in the correct threaded and slotted tip for holding cleaning patches or attaching a bore brush. This threaded end is a key identifying feature and confirms its intended use as a firearm cleaning implement rather than a general workshop or leatherworking tool. The proportions are entirely consistent with known Mauser C96 examples, made long enough to service the full barrel and chamber while also fitting neatly within the stock-holster compartment.
Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 20.5 cm. Overall length: 32.5 cm.
History Note:
The Mauser C96, introduced in 1896, became one of the most recognisable military pistols of the early 20th century and saw widespread service across Imperial Germany, the First World War, the interwar years, and numerous export contracts worldwide including China, Turkey, and Spain. Original accessories such as holsters, shoulder stocks, and especially correct cleaning rods are much harder to find than the pistols themselves, leading to many replacement and reproduction examples being produced for collectors seeking to complete a display or holster rig.
*Condition*
Condition is very good overall with light service wear and age patina throughout. The wooden handle remains solid with good colour and no major damage noted. The steel rod is straight and retains good finish with clear visible threading to the tip. A very presentable example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
