Description

*German, WW1, EKZ 17 Fuze for 77mm Gas Shell, Battlefield Recovered, Detonation Damage, Inert*

A rare and evocative battlefield relic of the First World War – a German EKZ 17 (Ersatzkopfzünder 17) fuze, originally fitted to the 77mm field gun chemical shell. The fuze retains much of its distinctive conical profile, with traces of the original brass finish still visible around the upper section. The lower portion has flared and split dramatically from detonation, giving an unmistakable ‘petalled’ effect of battlefield-recovered ordnance.

Historical Note:
The EKZ 17 was a simplified impact fuze designed for use with the 7.7cm Feldkanone series of shells, including high-explosive and chemical variants. These fuzes were commonly paired with gas projectiles (Blue Cross, Green Cross, and Yellow Cross types) for harassing fire. The pronounced damage seen on this example is typical of recovered fuzes which have been through detonation in action, making them particularly evocative of front-line use during the war.

*Condition*
Relic condition with heavy corrosion to the steel portions, deformation to the skirt from detonation, and scattered losses. Brass fuze head retains patches of original gilding. Stable overall and an appealing, dramatic display piece. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
