*German, WW2 - 1940 Dated, Luftwaffe Enlisted Man's Steel Belt Buckle – Schmöle & Comp., Menden*
Original World War II German Luftwaffe enlisted ranks belt buckle (Koppelschloss), manufactured in steel and retaining traces of its original wartime finish. The buckle displays the classic Luftwaffe national emblem featuring the spread-wing eagle clutching a swastika within an laurel-leaf wreath, executed in the standard wartime pattern worn by enlisted personnel and NCOs.
The reverse is stamped with the maker's trademark for Schmöle & Comp., Menden, together with the date 1940. The manufacturer's stylised S&C logo, often appearing as a vertical arrow-like motif between the letters, is a recognised wartime trademark encountered on original Luftwaffe equipment. Schmöle & Comp. of Menden was a known wartime producer of military belt buckles and field equipment for German armed forces contracts.
This example represents the later wartime steel construction pattern, introduced as strategic materials became increasingly restricted. The rear retains the correct separate catch assembly and twin-prong fastening bar associated with period manufacture.

History Note:
German Luftwaffe belt buckles formed a standard part of the combat equipment issued to enlisted personnel throughout the Second World War. Earlier production examples were commonly aluminium, but by 1940 many firms had transitioned to steel construction as wartime demands increased. Buckles of this type saw service throughout the Luftwaffe, from airfield personnel and anti-aircraft crews through to paratroopers and ground formations.
Condition:
Good original service-used condition displaying honest wartime wear throughout. Surface finish shows expected age and oxidation with loss of original paint and finish in areas.
