Description

*German, WW2 – c.1933-1935, SA Honour Dagger & Scabbard by Carl Julius Krebs (Kronenkrebs), Solingen – HE Gruppe Hessen*

An original SA Honour (Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch) dagger by Carl Julius Krebs, Solingen, complete with its matching brown anodised scabbard. The dagger retains a dark, crisp and well-executed acid-etched blade motto, “Alles für Deutschland”, with the reverse clearly stamped C. J. Krebs, Solingen beneath the crowned Krebs trademark. The nickel-plated crossguard and pommel display correct form and finish, fitted to a solid dark brown hardwood grip set with the original SA roundel and eagle-and-wreath insignia, both correctly recessed and showing natural age toning. The pommel nut remains intact and unaltered. The scabbard retains its original brown anodised finish, with correct nickel-plated throat and chape, fitted with a single suspension ring.

Measurements: Blade length – 22.2 cm. Overall length – 34.5 cm

Historical Note:
The SA dagger, introduced in 1933, served as a symbolic sidearm for members of the Sturmabteilung, embodying loyalty and ideological commitment rather than battlefield use.

This example bears the “He” Gruppe stamp, denoting SA Gruppe Hessen, applied at the crossguard and used prior to the standardisation of RZM control in 1935. The maker, Carl Julius Krebs Stahlwarenfabrik, was founded in 1866 after Carl Julius Krebs separated from his father’s firm. The company formally registered the “Kronenkrebs” (Crowned Crab) trademark with Solingen authorities on 13 May 1899. Early advertisements from the late 19th and early 20th centuries show production of knives, scissors, and leather goods, with later expansion into decorative daggers and export-market edged weapons. By the early 1930s, under Max Krebs, the firm had become a significant producer of Third Reich edged weapons. Notably, in February 1934, Max Krebs held an influential leadership role within the association responsible for regulating SA dagger manufacture, underscoring the firm’s importance within the Solingen trade. Krebs received the RZM code M7/5 in 1935, and continued production of SA, RAD, Luftwaffe and HJ edged weapons until the end of the period, returning to sporting and hunting knives after 1945. The company finally ceased trading in 1972.

*Condition*
Blade retains a strong, clean profile with scattered age-related spotting and surface oxidation consistent with honest period wear. The “Alles für Deutschland” etching remains deep, legible and visually strong, with no over-polishing. Maker mark is equally clear. Grip shows handling wear, surface marks and small areas of finish loss, but remains solid with no cracks or movement. SA roundel and eagle retain good definition with correct age toning. Crossguard and pommel show light pitting, scratches and wear to the nickel plating, consistent with age. Pommel nut remains intact and undisturbed. Scabbard shows expected finish wear, scattered losses to the brown anodising, and surface marks throughout. Throat and chape display age wear and light corrosion. Suspension ring present. A complete, honest example with clear originality throughout. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
