*German, WW2, Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse), Maker Marked “40” - Berg & Nolte AG, Lüdenscheid*
A very good original Second Class Iron Cross, awarded for gallantry in action or outstanding military leadership on the battlefield. Constructed in the correct three-piece form with a magnetic iron core finished in black lacquer, surrounded by a silvered beaded frame. The obverse features the raised swastika and institution date 1939, while the reverse bears the traditional 1813 date of establishment under King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia.
The suspension ring is clearly stamped “40”, denoting manufacture by Berg & Nolte AG, Lüdenscheid — one of the officially contracted wartime makers supplying high-quality EK2s to the Wehrmacht. The cross is accompanied by its original full-length combat ribbon in the national colours.
Measurements: Approx. 4.6 cm across (standard EK2 dimensions).
Historical Note:
The Iron Cross was reinstated by Adolf Hitler on 1 September 1939 to mark the German invasion of Poland and the beginning of the Second World War. Its long lineage and strong symbolic value made it the most widely recognised German decoration of the conflict. Although large numbers were produced — estimated over 4.5 million EK2s issued — properly marked, magnetic-core examples by known manufacturers such as Berg & Nolte continue to be sought after by collectors.

Excellent original condition with crisp detail to the core and frame. Light, honest wear and silvering loss around the edges, minor age toning and patina to suspension ring, and some fraying to the ribbon end — entirely consistent with age and period handling.
