*German, WW2, Iron Cross 2nd Class, (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse), Maker Marked “26” B.H. Mayer, Pforzheim*
A genuine WW2 German Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse), likely maker-marked “26” on the suspension ring for B.H. Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt, Pforzheim, but the imprint is hard to decipher. Three-piece construction with a magnetic iron core and silver-plated frame, showing light age patina and traces of frosting around the beaded edge. The obverse bears the raised 1939 date beneath the central swastika; the reverse features the 1813 institution date. Complete with its original red, white and black combatant’s ribbon, showing minor fraying at one end.

Historical Note:
The Iron Cross was re-instituted by Adolf Hitler on 1 September 1939, continuing the Prussian tradition of rewarding battlefield bravery regardless of rank. The 2nd Class was typically awarded for a single act of courage or leadership under fire, worn suspended from the second buttonhole of the tunic. Each cross followed the traditional three-part construction: a blackened magnetic core framed by two silvered shells. Maker code “26” denotes B.H. Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt of Pforzheim, one of the more prolific and respected wartime manufacturers whose workmanship remained consistently high throughout the conflict.

Very good original condition. Mild wear and toning to the silver frame with honest patination, black lacquer core intact and magnetic. Original ribbon with light fraying at one end. Uncleaned and of excellent collector quality. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
