Description

*German, WW2, K98 Bayonet (M1884-98 3rd pattern) & Scabbard, by Ernst Pack & Söhne “cul”, Matching Numbers, Dated 1941, Waffenamt Marked*

A World War II German K98 bayonet (Seitengewehr 84/98 III) complete with matching scabbard. The bayonet is marked on the ricasso “41 cul”, identifying manufacture by Ernst Pack & Söhne, Solingen in 1941. Both bayonet and scabbard are serial numbered “7233e” and marked “41 cul”, confirming them as an original matching pair.

The pommel bears a clear Waffenamt “WaA883” acceptance stamps, consistent with Solingen production in this period, with further Waffenamt marks visible to the flashguard and scabbard filial. The grips are of black Bakelite, secured with screws and showing the standard diagonal ribbed pattern.

Measurements: Blade length: approx. 24.6 cm. Overall length: approx. 38 cm

Historical Note:
The Seitengewehr 84/98 III was the standard bayonet issued with the German Karabiner 98k service rifle, the principal infantry weapon of the Wehrmacht in the Second World War. Designed as a rugged all-purpose knife as well as a rifle attachment, it was produced in vast numbers by Solingen’s major cutlery firms.

This example was manufactured by Ernst Pack & Söhne of Solingen, one of the region’s longest-established blade makers. Founded in the 19th century, Pack produced swords, edged weapons, and later military contract bayonets, earning a reputation for solid workmanship. During the war, the company was designated the factory code “cul”, used between 1940 and 1944 to mask origin from Allied intelligence. The addition of the date “41” identifies it as early-war production. The Waffenamt inspection stamp WaA883 was the acceptance mark assigned to Solingen bayonet production during 1940–41, providing confirmation of its period authenticity; so the WaA883 mark firmly associates this piece with early wartime manufacture.

Surviving bayonet and scabbard sets with matching serial numbers are notably scarcer, as most became mismatched through frontline use, post-war reallocation, or later surplus sales.

*Condition*
The bayonet and scabbard are in heavily patinated condition, with widespread surface rust and pitting to the blade, pommel, and scabbard body. The black Bakelite grips remain intact and solid, with only minor wear and no visible cracks. Markings, including “41 cul”, serial number, and Waffenamt stamps, remain legible despite corrosion. The scabbard retains its ball finial and shows matching serial number “7233e” and maker date and number “41 cul”, with Waffenamt eagle acceptance. Overall, a sound and collectable matching wartime pair, with untouched originality and desirable Waffenamt-marked fittings.
