*German, WW2, M34 Police Helmet - Feuerschutzpolizei M34 Stahlhelm (Double Decal & Air Vents)*
Original Period Item – Civil Police / Fire Protection Helmet – Rare Collectible
This is a genuine WWII-era German M1934 Feuerschutzpolizei helmet, worn by the Fire Protection Police under the Third Reich. It is constructed in steel with a crimped edge complete with original black paint on the interior and exterior and shows wear consistent with authentic period use. It features the classic “salt & pepper” ventilation holes—two groups of seven holes on either side of the crown—a hallmark of the M34 civil helmet design. All four liner retaining rivets are present but loose, with flat heads—a feature typical of the M34 design. The helmet bears an inner edge stamp mark "T" in a diamond, by maker Eisenhuettenwerke Thale A.G., Thale /Harz.
The double decal configuration, although faded, still shows remnants of the 2nd pattern wreathed Police eagle (introduced on July 28th 1936) and swastika, which confirm its use by the Feuerschutzpolizei. As per wartime regulations, the metal comb (originally used for structural reinforcement and aesthetic) has been removed—a typical field modification as the war progressed.
The liner is worn but original, and features the standard civilian-style suspension system.
Historical Context:
The Feuerschutzpolizei (Fire Protection Police) was an essential arm of Germany’s civil defence structure during WWII, tasked with firefighting, rescue, and air raid response. Following a 1936 decree by Heinrich Himmler, the police units were centralized and standardized. Fire Protection Police were given distinct blue uniforms and carmine-coloured service insignia, differentiating them from the standard green-clad Ordnungspolizei.
The M1934 helmet, introduced as a lightweight steel helmet for civil use, came in various styles. This model with ventilation holes and black semi-gloss finish was one of the earlier, more desirable versions before cost-cutting and material shortages led to the simplified "gladiator" helmets used later in the war.
Helmets like this were worn by Fire Police units when responding to bombings, fires, and other emergencies in wartime Germany. While civil helmets were not as robust as combat models, they were vital protective gear during urban defence efforts.
