Description

*German, WW2, Nickel Silver Serving Tray with Nazi Eagle and Swastika Emblem — Made by Wellner*

A substantial and historically significant German serving tray, manufactured by the renowned silversmith Wellner. Measuring approximately 39cm x 30.5cm, (46cm wide including handles), this heavy nickel silver tray features a divided central panel and sturdy side handles, indicative of high-quality institutional or official service ware.

The front bears a crisp engraved Reichsadler (national eagle) clutching a swastika in a wreath, marking it as an item used by official Nazi organizations or high-level state facilities during the Third Reich. The underside is stamped "WELLNER 63", referring to the maker and pattern or production code. Wellner was one of the principal suppliers of silver- and nickel-plated tableware to Nazi government institutions, military messes, and party organizations.

The tray shows age-related tarnish, surface wear, and light scratches, consistent with use and storage over the decades. These signs of use add authenticity and character, typical for period pieces of this type.

Historical Context
Wellner (originally August Wellner Söhne) was based in Aue, Saxony, and was a major supplier of hotel and institutional tableware throughout Europe before and during WWII. Their items bearing the eagle and swastika are sought after by collectors of WWII militaria and Third Reich memorabilia due to their direct connection to official German state use.

*Condition*
This Wellner nickel silver serving tray remains structurally solid, with both handles securely attached and no visible cracks or major dents. The surface shows significant tarnishing and age-related patina throughout, alongside scattered spots and light abrasions consistent with prolonged use and storage. The engraved eagle and swastika motif remains clear and well-defined. Overall, the tray displays an authentic, untouched look desirable to collectors, reflecting its historical usage rather than later restoration or polishing. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
