*German, WW2, Third Reich Framed Nürnberg Reichsparteitag 1935 Photograph, with Joseph Goebbels Propaganda Speech Insert*

Original framed Third Reich propaganda display piece comprising a period black-and-white photograph titled “Reichsparteitag 1935. Standartenweihe und Totenehrung” depicting the Zeppelinfeld (Zeppelin Field) rally grounds at Nürnberg during the 1935 Reich Party Rally. The image captures massed NSDAP formations assembled before the monumental Zeppelintribüne (Zeppelin Grandstand), designed by Albert Speer and completed in time for the 1935 rally, clearly visible in the distant background. The photograph is mounted within a contemporary black-painted wooden frame behind glass and retains a highly significant printed propaganda insert inserted beneath the reverse backboard.

The foreground distinctly shows ranks of ceremonial “Deutschland Erwache” (“Germany Awake”) standards associated with SA and SS formations, featuring the characteristic metal swastika roundels, fringed banners, and mounted standard plaques carried during major party ceremonies. The lower caption, printed in Fraktur-influenced Gothic script typical of official state propaganda publications of the mid-1930s, reads: “Reichsparteitag 1935. Standartenweihe und Totenehrung.” The lower right corner of the mount bears the printed reference number “125”, likely a publisher’s or series designation.

Mounted within the reverse of the frame is an original two-page printed Vorwort (“Foreword”) text containing an excerpt from Dr. Joseph Goebbels’ speech “Über den Begriff der Propaganda” (“On the Concept of Propaganda”), originally delivered on 28 July 1937 at the opening of the Große Deutsche Rundfunkausstellung (Great German Radio Exhibition) in Berlin. In the text, Goebbels outlines the National Socialist regime’s ideological justification for propaganda, mass-media control, and the public presentation of Adolf Hitler. The paper stock, typography, and layout indicate the insert was removed from a high-quality commemorative state publication or propaganda portfolio issued after mid-1937 and subsequently preserved within the frame assembly.

Approx. Measurements – Frame: 21.5 cm x 29.1 cm. Photograph: 12 cm x 17 cm.

History Note:
The Reichsparteitag (Nürnberg Rally) was the annual mass political rally staged by the National Socialist regime in Nürnberg between 1933 and 1938. The 1935 rally, officially titled the “Reichsparteitag der Freiheit” (“Rally of Freedom”), became one of the most symbolically important events of the regime and coincided with the introduction of the Nürnberg Laws. Ceremonial events such as the Standartenweihe formed a central part of the orchestrated propaganda spectacle designed to reinforce party unity, militarism, and ideological loyalty. Joseph Goebbels, Reich Minister of Propaganda, oversaw much of the regime’s mass-media presentation and political messaging, while Albert Speer’s monumental rally grounds became some of the most recognizable architectural symbols of the Third Reich propaganda apparatus.

*Condition*
Overall good untouched display condition for age. The photograph remains clear and well defined with mild age toning to the mount card. Slight matburn and acid-toning are visible around sections of the perimeter where the mount has remained in prolonged contact with the wooden frame, supporting long-term period framing. The rear propaganda speech insert displays period paper toning, edge wear, and a small loss to the right-hand edge. Frame with light handling wear, scuffs, and minor surface marks consistent with age. Backboard and retaining tabs appear original to the long-term assembly. Glass intact. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
