Description

*German, WW2 War Toy, Kriegsmarine Grand Admiral (Großadmiral) Raeder Saluting, by Elastolin (7cm), Handpainted*

Grand Admiral Raeder stood to attention and saluting in Bi-corne hat. Circa 1930’s. Marked underneath Elastolin in cursive, above Germany. Approx 7.4cm tall, oval base 2.5cm width.

Elastolin is a trademark used by the German company O&M Hausser (O&M Haußer) for the toy soldiers and other types of figures it manufactured from composite material and later from plastic. The Hausser firm was founded in 1904 by Christian Hausser and his sons Otto and Max.

Erich Johann Albert Raeder (24 April 1876 - 6 November 1960) was a key naval leader in Germany before and during World War II. Born in Hamburg, Raeder joined the Imperial German Navy in 1894, eventually becoming a Großadmiral (Grand Admiral) in 1939, the highest naval rank. He played a crucial role in planning naval strategy during World War I and later advocated for a powerful German navy, contributing significantly to the buildup of the Kriegsmarine and supporting submarine warfare.

Raeder fell out of favor with Hitler and was replaced by Karl Dönitz as head of the German Navy in 1943. Arrested by the Allies in 1945, Raeder was tried at the Nuremberg Trials, convicted of war crimes, and sentenced to life in prison, later reduced to 10 years. Released in 1955 due to health reasons, he died in 1960.
