The Russian saber—also known as the Sabia or Sabiya — was a Hussar-style weapon used by light cavalry officers in the late 18th century. The light cavalry saber – Pattern 1798 was used by the hussars and uhlans, and by the dragoons of the Caucasian Inspection till 1809. Duke Constantine Uhlans (Lifeguard Uhlans) carried this weapon until 1812. Its curved blade, designed for rapid, slashing attacks from horseback, proved highly effective when Russian Hussars, Cossacks, and light cavalry harassed Napoleon’s massive, supply-starved army during the invasion of Russia. The relentless tactics of the Russian light cavalry, combined with scorched-earth policies, reduced Napoleon’s Grande Armée to a fraction of its former strength.
This reproduction of a 1798 Russian Light Cavalry Officer’s Saber reflects the classic Hussar design. It was crafted for vicious, slashing strikes against disorganized and exhausted infantry, echoing the historical impact of Russian cavalry on the battlefield.
