~ Hitler Youth Knife by Horster of Solingen ~
This RZM Hitler Youth Knife is an exceptional specimen. The steel blade boasts a brilliant shine and retains its original cross-graining beautifully, showing only minor surface patina in select areas. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the circular “RZM” logo and the manufacturer’s code “M7/36,” identifying its production by E. u. F. Hörster of Solingen.
The Hitler Youth Knife was first introduced in the summer of 1933, following the Nazi rise to power in Germany. Numerous manufacturers produced the knife, which was available at designated stores for 4 Reichsmarks. Initially designed as a ceremonial sidearm, it also served practical purposes as a camping tool, often being sharpened by the users themselves. The early versions featured the Hitler Youth motto “Blut und Ehre!” (Blood and Honor) etched onto the blade and bore the logos of commercial manufacturers. These knives had nickel silver handles and anodized metal scabbards. The etching of the motto was phased out in August 1938. Subsequent models included nickel-plated steel handles, painted scabbards, and replaced commercial logos with RZM codes and the year of production. Some transitional models retained the etched motto while also incorporating production dates on the blade ricasso. Production of these knives is thought to have ended by 1942. All variations of the Hitler Youth Knife feature the organization’s diamond emblem on the handle.
