Description

*Imperial German c.1850 Hunting Dagger with Brass Boar’s Head Pommel and Scabbard*

This Imperial German hunting dagger, featuring a brass boar’s head pommel, recurved steel cross-guard, and bone grip bound with brass wire—is a classic example of a mid-19th-century Hirschfänger (literally “deer catcher”). These daggers were traditionally used by German nobility and hunters during boar and stag hunts, serving both as sidearms and ceremonial symbols of status. The boar’s head pommel is a distinctive motif, symbolizing strength and valour.

The hefty 12-inch steel blade bears faint foliate etching on both sides near the hilt, though no maker’s mark or date is visible. Measuring 1¾ inches at its widest and 6mm thick, the blade contributes to the dagger’s solid and practical design. The overall length of the weapon is 18 inches. It comes complete with its original brown leather scabbard, which includes a heavily decorated brass throat mount and chape. The chape is finished with a ball tip, while the throat mount features an ornate frog locket.

*Condition*
The blade shows light staining typical of its age. The leather scabbard and its stitching remain clean and intact, with only minor surface scuffs in keeping with age and use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of its condition.
