Description

*Indonesian / Malaysian, c. late 19th–early 20th century, Small Kris (Keris) Dagger with Wavy (Luk) Blade and Carved Wooden Hilt*

A compact ethnographic dagger of the kris (keris) tradition, overall length 23.5 cm, with a 15.5 cm wavy (luk) blade of smooth iron, free from the laminated pattern (pamor) seen on larger ceremonial examples. This smaller blade type — often made for children or as personal side arms — looks like it was forged plain but retains the characteristic serpentine form, with gentle curves along its length. The base is asymmetrical, bound by a brass ferrule, and fitted to a carved wooden hilt in simplified Jawa Demam style, darkened through handling and age.

History Note:
The kris or keris is one of the most distinctive weapons of Southeast Asia, found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, southern Thailand, and the Philippines. Its most recognisable feature is the wavy or serpentine blade (luk), the number of curves traditionally holding symbolic or mystical significance. Many full-size kris display striking pamor patterning created by layers of iron and nickelous iron, but smaller examples — particularly those made for youths or everyday wear — were often produced with smooth, undecorated blades, as here.

In combat, the wavy blade was feared for the wounds it inflicted: the curves increased cutting surface and caused punctures that were jagged and difficult to stitch, often prolonging recovery. At the same time, the luk form carried strong ritual meaning, with the number of waves associated with status, protection, and cosmology, making the kris as much a spiritual emblem as a weapon.

*Condition*
The blade is smooth and stable, showing even dark patination but no visible pamor. The hilt remains solid, with minor nicks and wear consistent with age, and the brass ferrule is toned with natural patina. No scabbard is present. Overall, a well-preserved and evocative example of a smaller kris dagger. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
