*Italian, WW2, Beretta Model 1934 Semi-Automatic Pistol, Calibre 9 Corto (.380 ACP), Serial No. 867899, Dated 1941-XIX, Matching Numbers, EU Deactivated*

An original Second World War Italian Beretta Model 1934 semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm Corto (.380 ACP), manufactured by Pietro Beretta at Gardone Val Trompia and dated 1941-XIX of the Fascist Era calendar. The Model 1934 became the standard sidearm of the Italian armed forces during the Second World War and remains one of the most recognisable military pistols of wartime Italy.

This example retains matching serial number 867899 to both the slide and frame, a highly desirable feature for collectors as many surviving wartime Beretta pistols were rebuilt, refinished, or assembled from mixed parts during post-war service life. The matching numbers remain crisp and clearly struck with identical factory font and spacing.

The left side of the slide retains the full original wartime legend: “P. BERETTA - CAL. 9 CORTO - Mo 1937 - BREVETTATO” over “GARDONE V.T. 1941-XIX”. The “Mo 1937” roll marking is a particularly interesting wartime variation. Although mechanically a standard Model 1934 pistol, Beretta utilised certain roll dies marked for the 1937 pattern revision during specific wartime production blocks, a feature documented on some 1941-manufactured pistols. The Fascist Era marking “XIX” identifies production during the nineteenth year of Mussolini’s regime, corresponding to the period between late October 1940 and October 1941. These dual-date slide legends remain highly collectible due to their direct historical association with wartime Fascist Italy.

The frame retains the original Gardone Val Trompia proof house crest above the crowned “PSF” smokeless powder proof mark (Polvere Senza Fumo), confirming successful proof testing for smokeless ammunition. The 1941 date stamp beneath these marks correctly matches the year recorded within the slide legend.

Notably absent is the usual “RE” Regio Esercito army acceptance marking commonly encountered on standard Italian Army-issued Beretta pistols of the period. The absence of this military branch stamp strongly suggests allocation to a non-army contract, most likely the Pubblica Sicurezza national police, Fascist Militia formations (MVSN Blackshirts), or commercial/private officer purchase channels during wartime production.

The pistol retains its original wartime black Bakelite grip panels with crisp circular PB Beretta monograms to both sides. The military lanyard ring remains intact at the heel together with the correct wartime-pattern removable magazine featuring elongated witness slots and the characteristic Beretta finger-rest floorplate extension. The magazine is correctly unmarked, entirely consistent with authentic wartime Beretta military production.

The safety lever remains functional in feel and is shown in the fire-ready position, exposing the original red enamel indicator dot. The sharpness of the engraving and milling throughout indicates the pistol has not been aggressively polished or heavily refinished.

Approx. Measurements: Barrel Length: approx. 8.2 cm (3.25 inches)

History Note:
Introduced during the 1930s, the Beretta Model 1934 became the principal sidearm of the Italian military throughout the Second World War. Compact, robust, and highly reliable, it earned an excellent reputation under harsh battlefield conditions in North Africa, the Balkans, Greece, and on the Eastern Front.

During 1941, Beretta simultaneously fulfilled numerous military, police, paramilitary, and commercial contracts. Pistols within the 867000 serial range occupy an especially interesting production bracket as many examples lack standard army acceptance markings, suggesting distribution outside regular Regio Esercito procurement channels. Such pistols are commonly associated with wartime issue to the Pubblica Sicurezza police force, MVSN Fascist Militia formations, or private-purchase acquisition by officers and officials. Unlike Romanian export contract pistols of the same period — which carried distinct serial ranges and “Cal. 9 Scurt” slide legends — this example retains the correct domestic Italian “Cal. 9 Corto” marking.

Following the Italian armistice of 1943, surviving Beretta pistols continued to see widespread service with German occupation troops, Republican Fascist forces, police units, and post-war Italian security services.

*Condition*
A very attractive and honest wartime example retaining strong original markings, matching serial numbers, and desirable untouched military character throughout. The pistol displays original wartime blued finish with natural service wear, thinning to high edges, scattered age-related oxidation, and handling patina consistent with operational use and long-term storage. There is no evidence of heavy buffing, aggressive refinishing, or modern restoration. The original black Bakelite grips remain intact with excellent definition to the circular PB monograms. Minor oxidation and wear to the exposed grip frame edges are entirely consistent with wartime field carry. The included wartime-pattern magazine displays matching age and finish characteristics to the pistol itself. Mechanically, the slide moves freely under spring tension and the trigger moves correctly; however, in accordance with its EU specification deactivated status, the pistol does not cock or dry fire. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
