This is an impressive original Large Bowie Knife made in Sheffield by J.E. Middleton & Sons, Rockingham Street, Sheffield. It has a perfect 10” long deep swept Bowie blade. The back of the blade has scalloped tool work. The knife measures 15 3/4” overall. The ricasso is stamped with the Knife makers name 'J.E. Middleton & Sons, Rockingham Street, Sheffield'. It has a silver cross guard and dramatic stylised pommel with a black grip and it is complete with its brown leather sheath. The rear of the sheath has a single belt loop impressed ‘RM’.
There have been Middletons grinding, finishing and making knives since the early 1800's. After being a bound apprentice working for his uncle Thomas Middleton, living in the family home on the premises of George Wolstenholme's works, Joseph Edwin Middleton set up business on his own account doing out work for most of the large cutlery firms in Sheffield, as was the usual practice. In 1888 when his sons were old enough, he set up 'Joseph Edwin Middleton & Sons'. His oldest son, also called Joseph Edwin was the grandfather of Ron and Roy. The last Joseph Edwin Middleton was killed in France in 1918. His youngest son George, had two sons. Ron and Roy who made high quality knives until recently.

This Bowie Knife is in excellent condition as is the sheath, all stitching & leather of the sheath are intact. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
