*Kuwait, 1991, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwaiti Issue), 4th Class Bronze, Gulf War Medal with Ribbon Bar & Case*

Original Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwaiti issue), 4th Class in bronze, awarded by the Government of Kuwait to members of the Coalition forces who participated in the liberation of Kuwait during the 1990–1991 Gulf War (Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm).

The medal is struck in bronze and suspended from a ribbon in the national colours of Kuwait: green, white and red with a black trapezoidal section at the top, reflecting the Kuwaiti national flag. The obverse displays the coat of arms of Kuwait, featuring a falcon with outstretched wings framing a disc containing a traditional dhow sailing vessel, with the inscription in Arabic reading “Liberation Medal 1991.”

Below the emblem appears an enamelled shield in the colours of the Kuwaiti flag. The reverse depicts a relief map of Kuwait with radiating lines symbolising the liberation of the country.

The medal is housed in its original blue presentation case bearing the Kuwaiti national emblem in gilt on the lid and includes the matching ribbon bar.

Approx. Measurements – Medal diameter: approx. 35 mm.

History Note:
The Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwaiti version) was instituted in 1991 by the Government of Kuwait following the liberation of the country from Iraqi occupation during the Gulf War.

It was awarded to members of the international Coalition forces who participated in operations connected with the defence and liberation of Kuwait between 2 August 1990 and 31 August 1993. Personnel from many nations—including the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and other Coalition partners—were eligible.

The Kuwaiti award was issued in several classes, with the 4th Class bronze medal typically awarded to enlisted personnel and junior ranks. While many countries authorised their personnel to accept the award, some—such as the United Kingdom—permitted acceptance but did not authorise it to be worn on the official uniform.

Today these medals remain popular with collectors of Gulf War and modern military campaign medals, particularly when complete with their original presentation cases.
