Description

*Large Frontier Bowie Knife, Marked “TOAN”*

A large and substantial American frontier-style Bowie knife, notable for its imposing size, weight, and robust construction. The knife features a broad clip-point blade with long false edge and heavy spine, exhibiting hand-finished surfaces with visible period grind lines beneath the polish. The blade is fitted with a substantial brass crossguard of stepped form, typical of large Western Bowies of the late 19th century.

The grip is of two-piece dark hardwood slabs, secured by three brass pins, showing natural shrinkage, wear, and patination consistent with age. The knife has excellent presence in hand, weighing nearly 3 lbs, and was clearly intended as a serious fighting or utility sidearm rather than a decorative piece.

The ricasso is stamped “TOAN”, with additional lightly struck numerals to the obverse - 800, interpreted as workshop or batch markings.

Approx. Measurements - Overall length: 55.5 cm. Blade length: 39 cm. Blade width (at widest point): 7.5 cm. Spine thickness: approx. 0.5 cm. Weight: approx. 2.7 lbs

Historical Note:
Large Bowies of this scale were popular in the post-Civil War American West, where they served as multipurpose tools and personal weapons among frontiersmen, hunters, and settlers. The heavy blade, broad clip point, and substantial guard reflect a practical design prioritising durability and stopping power. The stamped name “TOAN” likely represents a small regional maker or retailer operating for the American market, a common practice among independent cutlers of the period whose work was produced in limited numbers.

*Condition*
In very good condition overall. The blade retains its full profile with no evidence of later reshaping, showing scattered age-related pitting, surface marks, and polishing wear consistent with period use. The brass guard exhibits expected patination and minor handling marks. The wooden grip shows honest wear, surface abrasions, and age darkening, with tight pins and no movement noted. A genuine, untouched example displaying natural ageing throughout. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
